Un film-pilote avait été préalablement tourné en 1967, Le Grand Ours et l'enfant (Gentle Giant), sorti en Belgique[1] mais inédit en France, lequel est une préquelle à la série télévisée, et relate la première rencontre avec l'ours et son apprivoisement[2].

En France, la série a été diffusée à partir du sur la première chaîne de l'ORTF, dans le cadre des émissions pour la jeunesse du jeudi après-midi Ohé ! Jeudi puis rediffusée à la fin des années 70, et au Québec à partir du à la Télévision de Radio-Canada.

Genèse

Cette série télévisée s'inspire d'un roman de Walt Morley, Gentle Ben, paru aux États-Unis en 1965, et en France en 1968 sous le titre Le Grand Ours et l'enfant[3].

Synopsis

Depuis la disparition de ses parents, Mark est confié à son oncle, un garde-chasse. Ils vivent en Floride avec Monsieur Ben, un ours noir[4] apprivoisé.

  • La sĂ©rie a remportĂ© un vif succès et engendrĂ© de nombreux produits dĂ©rivĂ©s. L'ours Ben a mĂŞme Ă©tĂ© invitĂ© par le gouverneur de la Floride Ă  une fĂŞte Ă  Fort Lauderdale en 1969.
  • Clint Howard, le jeune hĂ©ros qui incarne Mark, est le frère cadet de Ron Howard (Denis la petite peste, Lassie, Happy Days, etc.). Au cours de sa carrière, le comĂ©dien a souvent tournĂ© sous la direction de son aĂ®nĂ©. Ă€ noter Ă©galement que Rance Howard, leur père, joue Henry Boomhauer, le voisin. Tous ont Ă©tĂ© rĂ©unis au dĂ©but des annĂ©es 1960 dans le feuilleton familial The Andy Griffith Show[5].
