Cette espèce se rencontre au Mexique en Basse-Californie du Sud et en Basse-Californie et aux États-Unis en Californie[1].

C'est un serpent ovipare[1].

La sous-espèce Hypsiglena ochrorhyncha unaocularis[3] a été élevée au rang d'espèce par Mulcahy, Martínez-Gómez, Aguirre-León, Cervantes-Pasqualli et Zug en 2014[4].
