Motunui
Motunui (la grande Ăźle en langue Maori, Ă partir de Motu Nui) est une petite ville du nord de la rĂ©gion de Taranaki, dans lâĂle du Nord de la Nouvelle-ZĂ©lande.

Elle est localisĂ©e sur le trajet de la route State Highway 3/S H 3 (en) tout prĂšs des berges de North Taranaki Bight (en), Ă 6 kilomĂštres Ă lâest de a ville de Waitara.
Lâusine de mĂ©thanol
Motunui est la localisation de lâusine de fabrication de mĂ©thanol de Motunui, la plus grande dans le monde Ă lâĂ©poque de sa construction[1]. Elle fut ouverte en 1986 pour convertir le gaz naturel en mĂ©thanol et le mĂ©thanol en pĂ©trole synthĂ©tique en utilisant un processus dĂ©veloppĂ© par la sociĂ©tĂ© Mobil.
Lâusine Ă©tait lâun des items du projet Think Big prĂŽnĂ© par le troisiĂšme gouvernement national de Nouvelle-ZĂ©lande (en).
Une sortie dans lâocĂ©an des eaux usĂ©es de lâinstallation nĂ©cessita des recherches supplĂ©mentaires sur les apparences de cas significatifs de pollution, qui fut soumis au tribunal de Waitangi[2].
Le processus devint non viable Ă©conomiquement Ă la fin des annĂ©es 1990 du fait de lâeffondrement du prix du pĂ©trole, si bien que la part du pĂ©trole synthĂ©tique dans lâinstallation fut mis Ă l'arrĂȘt et la production de pĂ©trole synthĂ©tique cessa en [3]. Lâusine au contraire produisit uniquement du mĂ©thanol pour lâexportation.
La production de mĂ©thanol cessa en 2004 Ă lâapproche de la dĂ©plĂ©tion du champ de gaz de Maui (en), qui fit augmenter le prix du gaz naturel[4].
En 2005, une station de production (sans nom particulier) pour le nouveau champ de Pohokura oil/gas field (en) offshore fut construite immĂ©diatement Ă lâouest de lâusine de Motunui. L'usine commença une production commerciale en [5]. En 2008, le train de production de mĂ©thanol no 2 fut remis en service, suivit par la ligne de synthĂšse No.1 en 2012[6].
Actuellement, c'est la propriĂ©tĂ© de la sociĂ©tĂ© Methanex (en) qui le met en Ćuvre, et les 2 chaĂźnes de production de lâusine ont une capacitĂ© de production annuelle totale de 2,4 millions de tonnes de mĂ©thanol[6].
