Biographie
Il a étudié au Liverpool College de 1938 à 1944. Il effectue son service militaire dans la Royal Navy comme enseigne de vaisseau de 1944 à 1947.
Il est professeur de jurisprudence de 1956 à 1968 à l'université d'Aberdeen.
En 1968 il obtient la place de Regius Professor of Civil Law qu'il garde jusqu'en 1993.
