Sa population Ă©tait de 3 090 habitants lors du recensement de (recensement de 2006), en augmentation de 144 personnes par rapport Ă celui de [1].
En , elle était montée à 3 243 habitants[2].
Description
Inglewood est localisée à 16 km au sud-est de la ville de New Plymouth, sur le trajet de la route State Highway 3/S H 3 (en), tout prÚs du mont Taranaki/Egmont. La ville siÚge à 200 m d'altitude.
Ăconomie
Câest une petite ville de service pour une rĂ©gion principalement de fermes laitiĂšres. Bien que situĂ©e tout prĂšs de la citĂ© de New Plymouth, la ville possĂšde les commerces habituels et les structures de services pour la ville et le pays alentour.
Toponymie
Inglewood fut dĂ©nommĂ©e par Philip Colin Threkeld pour la forĂȘt d'Inglewood Forest (en) dans la rĂ©gion du Cumberland, en Angleterre.
La ville fut fondĂ©e en 1873, et son nom rapidement passa de « Moatown » à « Milton », avant dâĂȘtre renommĂ©e « Inglewood » en 1875 pour Ă©viter la confusion avec la ville de Milton situĂ©e dans lâĂle du Sud[3].
Patrimoine
Un certain nombre de bĂątiments de la ville sont inscrits sur la liste des Heritage New Zealand. Parmi ceux-ci la gare de chemin de fer et le parc Ă bestiaux sont les seuls sur la liste de CatĂ©gorie I. Le « Shoe Store Building » au coin de Rata et de Richmond Streets est lâun des huit, qui sont listĂ©s en CatĂ©gorie II. Le musĂ©e National du jouet âFun Ho! Toy Museumâ et lâusine, qui fabriquait une production de jouet en mĂ©tal[4], est situĂ© dans le centre dâinformation de la ville sur la rue principale (sur Rata Street, au coin de Matai Street). Ătabli par âBarry Youngâ, il est maintenant gĂ©rĂ© par Richard Jordan.
Inglewood fut le siĂšge de la Moa-Nui Co-operative Dairies factory. En 1992, la laiterie Moa-Nui fusionna avec la laiterie Kiwi Co-operative Dairies et la fabrication fut centralisĂ©e Ă lâusine de Kiwi's Whareroa prĂšs de la ville dâHawera. JusquâĂ rĂ©cemment, les deux cheminĂ©es de lâusine pouvaient ĂȘtre aperçues de plusieurs miles Ă la ronde.
En 2006, le seul magasin de vĂȘtement dâInglewood cessa de fournir des sous-vĂȘtements de femme, obligeant le RĂ©vĂ©rend Anglican âGary Husbandâ Ă commencer un 'knickers-run' vers New Plymouth et organiser des volontaires pour aider au transport de ceux-ci, ce qui nĂ©cessite un parcours de 20 km[5].
Ăducation
Inglewood a un certain nombre dâĂ©coles mixtes.
- LâĂ©cole Inglewood High School (en) est une Ă©cole secondaire allant de l'annĂ©e 9 Ă 13 avec un taux de dĂ©cile de 6 et un effectif de 425 Ă©lĂšves[6]. L'Ă©cole fut Ă©tablie en 1957[7].
- LâĂ©cole dââInglewood schoolâ et lâĂ©cole 'St Patrick' sont des Ă©coles primaires allant de l'annĂ©e 1 Ă 8 avec un dĂ©cile de 5 et un effectif respectivement de 333 Ă©lĂšve[8] et 77 Ă©lĂšves[9]. LâĂ©cole dâInglewood fut fondĂ©e en 1875[10]. LâĂ©cole St Patrick est une Ă©cole catholique subventionnĂ©e par lâĂ©tat[11].
Personnalités notables
Inglewood a fourni une bonne partie des effectifs des All Blacks (John Major (en), Dave "Trapper" Loveridge, Chris Masoe), et aussi lâartiste contemporain majeur :Michael Stevenson , qui a reprĂ©sentĂ© la Nouvelle-ZĂ©lande Ă la Biennale de Venise en 2003[12].
