En 1850, elle épousa William Barr ; le couple émigra quatre ans plus tard aux États-Unis et s'installa à Galveston (Texas). Après le décès de son mari, elle s'installa à New York en 1869 où elle commença à écrire pour des périodiques religieux et à publier des contes ou des romans pseudo-historiques.
