Biographie

Elizabeth Jennings naît à Skirbeck, dans le Lincolnshire. Lorsqu’elle a six ans, sa famille emménage à Oxford, où elle demeure jusqu’à la fin de ses jours[1]. Elle fait ses études secondaires à la Rye St Antony School, une école catholique alors située à Oxford[2], puis à la Oxford High School[3], puis est étudiante au St Anne's College de l'université d'Oxford.

À l’issue de ses études, elle devient bibliothécaire[4].

Les premières poĂ©sies de Jenning sont publiĂ©es dans l’Oxford Poetry, le New English Weekly, The Spectator, l’Outposts, ou encore le Poetry Review, mais elle ne publie aucun ouvrage avant ses 27 ans.

Gerard Manley Hopkins, Auden, Robert Graves, et Edwin Muir ont été les poètes lyriques qui l’ont influencée[1].

Son deuxième livre, A Way of Looking, remporte le Prix Somerset-Maugham. L’argent qu’elle gagne à cette occasion lui permet de passer trois mois à Rome. Ce séjour, propice à une révélation mystique, marque un tournant dans sa carrière[1].

Sa verve poétique, plus traditionnelle que novatrice, demeure célèbre pour son lyrisme et la maîtrise des règles de forme[1]. Son œuvre fait montre d’une simplicité de versification caractéristique des poètes membres du mouvement britannique The Movement (en) : Philip Larkin, Kingsley Amis, et Thom Gunn[1].

Sa santé mentale reste fragile. Elle estime que si certains de ses accès ont contribué à son inspiration poétique, ses œuvres ne doivent cependant pas être considérées comme autobiographiques. Elles sont essentiellement empreintes de références catholiques[1].

Elle meurt Ă  l’âge de 74 ans dans une maison de santĂ© Ă  Bampton, dans l’Oxfordshire, et elle est inhumĂ©e Ă  Oxford au cimetière de Wolvercote.
